Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a new technology that allows you to make voice calls over the internet. VoIP can help you bypass traditional telecommunication companies and get cheaper or even free calls through your computer.

You can only talk through the internet to people who have installed the same piece of software. For example, if you want to make a call using Skype software, those you are calling must have Skype installed on their computer too. Some pieces of software allow you to make only PC to PC calls, but most of them allow PC to phone communication.

VoIP technology allows you to make calls directly from your computer, in which case you obviously need a head set, or from a special VoIP phone, which can be connected to your computer through USB. You can also use a traditional hand set that you'll connect to an adapter.

The VoIP technology sends your voice through the internet in the form of a digital signal. When you make a PC to phone call, the system will convert your voice into a regular phone signal.

To be able to use VoIP technology you'll need the following:

  • a broadband internet connection
  • a computer
  • a VoIP software
  • a head set or a VoIP phone or a traditional phone and an adaptor.

VoIP technology enables you to save money. You can easily give up your land line phone and pay only for a broadband internet connection. The VoIP software is, in most cases, a freeware and PC to PC calls are free. But if you want to make PC to land line or mobile phone calls, you'll have to pay. You can sign up by using the web site of the company that produces the VoIP software.
