All you need to know when travelling to Greece, answers to such questions as what is the currency, what power do they use? phones? When are the public holidays? Emergency phone numbers, here it is...
- Currency: Greece uses the Euro, which may be obtained at any bank. You can also find exchange offices in most airports, railway stations and hotels. The exchange rate may fluctuate a little bit from day to day.
- Power: The electricity supply is 220 volts. If you use appliances that work with 110 or 120 volts, you'll need a step down transformer. To power your device in Europe, you'll need a UK to EU adapter, as Greece uses standard Continental European power outlets.
- Phones: Phone sets must be able to change from pulse to tone (and vice versa), the two dialing systems used in Greece. For mobile phones, a dual voltage power adapter is necessary.
- National Holidays: On national holidays, everything is closed in Greece: New Year's Day (January 1), Epiphany day (January 6), Greek national Day (March 25), Good Friday (no fixed day), Christian Easter and Easter Monday (no fixed date), Labor Day (May 1), Pentecost Monday (no fixed date), Assumption Day (August 15), Óhi Day (October 28), Christmas and the day after Christmas (December 25 and 26)
- Emergency phone numbers: Police: 100, Firefighters: 199, Ambulance: 166, Coast Guard: 108.
- Driving: Speed limits are measured in Kilometers per Hour and they vary between 50km/h in residential areas and 120 km/h on expressways. Make sure you always check road signs as speed limits can vary. Also make sure you always wear your seat belt and your car is equipped with a warning triangle, first aid kit and a fire extinguisher. Traffic rules are the same as in all European countries and the driving is on the right side. Be extra careful when crossing an unguarded level railway crossing.
- Road signs are written in Greek and repeated phonetically in English.
- Car Insurance: The Motor Insurance Bureau located in Athens, at 10 Xenofontos Street, Tel: 32306733 can help you obtain car insurance.
- The ELPA: The ELPA road assistance service, located in Athens, 2-4 Messogion Street, can offer free assistance for light repairs, as well as free legal advice on mutters concerning automobiles.
- Health: No vaccinations are necessary for EU, US or Canadian citizens.
- Financial regulations: Banknotes more than 1000 US dollars must be declared at customs.
