Increasingly, hotel guests are facing extra charges for optional services onto the bill. Latest data shows that consumers will spend about $ 1.75 billion in the summer of 2007 on hotel fees and surcharges.

  1. First thing that you should check is whether amenities offered by the hotel are covered by the cost of the stay. Thus, amenities like a fitness center, a pool or a golf course can be charge ranging from $12 to $40 a day. You will be charged even if you do not take advantage of these amenities. The denomination they received is resort amenities fee.
  2. Moreover, you can see a 'surcharge fee' which can range from $3 to $6 a day and a mini bar restocking fee. Even if you pay for the items taken out of the mini bar, some hotels will charge you $ 2.50 + a restocking fee on the first item you remove.
  3. Pay attention to cancellation fees. If you do not cancel with 24, 48 or 72 hours in advance then you might just be forced to stay there for as long as it was initially planned.
  4. Be aware of early departure fees. If you check out of a hotel in an urban area with one day before the term, the charge can be of $ 50 or you can pay for the night you didn't stay.
  5. In order to prevent the extra fees, ask before making the reservations. Inquire about any fees and surcharges that can be automatically applied to the bill. Also make sure that you get the name of the person that you talked to.
