SEM Top Tips

  1. Always make sure your content is unique.
  2. Make sure you have unique meta tags and unique page titles.
  3. Check to make sure your website has not had its content compromised by content thieves.
  4. Use the www.copyscape.com website to check if your content appears on other websites.
  5. Another way to check for content theft and website name hijacking is to do a search on Google for references to your domain name, use Google's inurl: command like this: inurl:yourdomain.com.
  6. Learn about redirects and the implications that different types of redirects can have on your content and domain(s).
  7. Use Google's site: command to identify if your site is indexed correctly.
  8. Cancel the bad effect of some scraper sites by using frame breaking Javascript code in your website pages.
  9. Ban scraper sites via hosting server IP bans.
  10. Website pages should only be 70% similar which can be hard to achieve on some dynamic site designs.
  11. Multiple domain sites need proper consultation, good strategy and planning.
  12. The supplemental index is very important because it highlights how a site has been treated by Google's indexing and archiving system.
  13. Having supplemental pages in Google does not always have to be a bad thing if the main traffic/conversion pages are not supplemental, but having no supplemental pages is the ideal situation.
  14. Having a supplemental page means that a web page does not fulfil all 3 of Google's supplemental page marking criteria.
  15. The supplemental index is a separate Google index that pages that fail Google's quality control are placed in.
  16. Web pages in the supplemental index are not visited by Googlebot as often.
  17. Do not use 302 redirects unless you really must.
  18. Search for duplicate content on Google by enclosing a piece of your text in quotation marks and searching.
  19. Determine which domain you are going to use, http://www.yoursite.com or http://yourdomain.com .
  20. Create a water tight setup with correct redirect usage.
